Hazel’s cage. Can you find her in the picture?

EDIT: You find the detailed step by step guide for building this hamster cage here – Building your own hamster cage step by step guide

If you have seen Hazels big hamster cage in some of my posts and you have wondered how we have built it then have a look at the following pictures!

I can’t give any detailed step-by-step description as I my boyfriend has done most of the work :) But maybe some of you can find some inspiration to build your very own big cage for your furry little friend.

Here we go.

Let me know if you are interested in some more detailed information about how this cage has been built or what material we have used! I’m sure Ross is more than happy to help as he is really proud of his little project :)

How do you deal with the problem of urine? Or do yours have a specific spot they go and you placed something there?

    • babblepie March 23, 2013 at 13:34 Reply

      Hey Stephanie,
Hazel usually pees in one corner that is close to where she sleeps. I always put a piece of poly pocket there ( i fold it up a little bit so that it covers the wall as well) and some sheets of kitchen roll on top. The sheets I change once a week. Very easy, quick and clean :)

What kind of wood did you use? I know there are lots of types that are not safe for the hamster, but I want to know what types are. Also what kind of glue did you use? I am thinking of building a wooden cage myself!!

Stephanie, this is truly amazing! I’ve been browsing for a new cage since the pet store sold me one that is way too small. You have inspired me to design my own. I am fortunate to be married to a woodworker. :) My hamster too has a chosen corner to pee, but he kinda just poops anywhere. My question is, how often do you change out the bedding? I do once a week now but with that much space, I’m thinking more like once a month would be sufficient. Also, did y’all make the ramps and water bottle holder as well? Any tips on that? I’m worried about adhesives or anything that would be toxic cause my little guy loves to chew.

Hello! Just look at that habitat! I sure am interested in the details of everything! (if possible, haha :D) I would love to make a habitat like that for my hamster to live in one of these days. And a question, did you or your partner coated the woods with any Plastikote or covered the base and shelves with contact paper of some sort?

Hello Babblepie, I know this post is over a year old but I want to build a couple of these for my children’s pets (2 hamsters, 2 gerbils) and was wondering what dimensions it is and what kinds of materials were used and if there are any updates since a year has gone by. I appreciate any help you can provide.

im just wonder about how much walking space, square footage that ended up being and how much it cost you? I have a large doll house being sold for cheap and its waiting for me to pick it up. I want to put doors on it and line the bottom with contact paper etc. but maybe just making my own hutch might be cheaper and less complicated. Yours looks well organized and I just wanna make sure the new hamster would have a lot of walking space
